Pharmaceutical, fragrance, agrochemical, electroplating, liquid crystal4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde bearing a phenolic hydroxyl group at the para position. It is slightly soluble in water (approximately 13.8 g/L at 30 °C) but readily soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone and ethyl acetate; it dissolves in hot benzene as well. The compound sublimes readily when exposed to air and carries a faint aromatic odor. Its pKa is about 7.61 at 25 °C, reflecting the weak acidity of the phenolic hydroxyl group.
Because both the hydroxyl and aldehyde groups are highly reactive, PHBA participates in condensation, oxidation, reduction and etherification reactions, which makes it a foundational intermediate for a wide range of downstream molecules. Leafchem offers three grades tailored to pharmaceutical, fine chemical and industrial applications.

Key Application Fields
FAQ :
Q1: What is 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde and what are its common names?
A: 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (CAS 123-08-0, EINECS 204-599-1), commonly abbreviated PHBA, is also known as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde or 4-formylphenol. It appears as a white to light yellow crystalline powder with a faint aromatic odor.
Q2: What are the minimum order quantity and lead time?
A: The MOQ is 500 kg. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks after order confirmation, subject to order quantity and grade.
Q3: Is 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde soluble in water?
A: It is only slightly soluble in water (about 13.8 g/L at 30 °C), but readily soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone and ethyl acetate, and soluble in hot benzene.
Q4: What grades do you offer?
A: We supply Refined Grade (purity ≥99.8%, moisture ≤0.3%, mp 115.5–118 °C), Semi-refined Grade (purity ≥99.5%, moisture ≤0.3%, mp 115–118 °C) and Crude Grade (purity ≥99.0%, moisture ≤0.5%, mp 114.5–116.5 °C). Chloride, heavy metals and insoluble matter are controlled in the Refined and Semi-refined grades.
Q5: What are the main applications?
A: It is a key intermediate for pharmaceuticals (TMP, ampicillin, p-hydroxyphenylglycine), fragrances (raspberry ketone, vanillin derivatives), agrochemicals (bromoxynil and herbicide intermediates), cyanide-free electroplating brighteners and liquid crystal materials.
