4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (CAS 123-08-0; commonly abbreviated PHBA, also called p-hydroxybenzaldehyde or 4-formylphenol) is a white to light yellow crystalline powder with a faint aromatic odor. It is a versatile aromatic aldehyde carrying both a phenolic hydroxyl and an aldehyde group on the benzene ring, and is an important organic synthesis intermediate and fine chemical. With a molecular weight of 122.12 and a melting point of about 115–118 °C, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is a key building block in the pharmaceutical, fragrance, agrochemical, electroplating and liquid crystal industries.
