Cobalt(II) oxide (CoO, CAS 1307-96-6), also known as cobaltous oxide or cobalt monoxide, is an inorganic chemical raw material supplied as an odorless grey-black to olive-green powder. It is produced by the controlled thermal decomposition of cobalt carbonate or other cobalt compounds at high temperature, yielding a stable oxide with a cubic rock-salt crystal structure, a melting point of approximately 1,935 °C and a density of about 6.45 g/cm³. The product is practically insoluble in water but dissolves readily in mineral acids to form cobalt(II) salts, which makes it a versatile building block across ceramics, glass, pigments, catalysis and battery materials.
